Annual Report LII - 2025: Braking, Bad
I’ve always had an interesting relationship with brakes: many people have said I don’t use them enough. Famously, in our family at least, I ended up parked in a field - via the roof - in my Mum’s very new Mercedes SLK at the age of 19. I had only been insured on the car for a day, in order to ferry it back from London to Thriplow. I don’t remember the exact details now, but I think it’s safe to say that greater use of brakes would have prevented the incident. A decade later, but only about a quarter of a mile away, I rolled my beaten-up old Discovery on a farm track, although this time I was able to drive away and continue the day’s pigeon shooting. Obviously, more use of brakes could also have averted this incident.
